IOT unPlugged@Lounge47 – Wisense Platform Demo by Arvind Padmanabhan & Ram Krishnan

Connectivity, smart devices, the demand for data and new sensors are increasing rapidly while the cost of computing is dropping. These developments are fuelling the IOT trend that has a growing number of enthusiasts, entrepreneurs and markets.

Lounge47 would like to support this entrepreneurial community by offering an opportunity to learn from the experts and network with other like-minded entrepreneurs.

Mr. Arvind Padmanabhan and Mr. Ram Krishnan from WiSense, which enables IOT applications by offering a cost-effective and easy-to-use open-source development platform.

Arvind and Ram will introduce IOT and its applications. Using the WiSense platform, they will demo simple applications and discuss further possibilities using their product. This interactive session will offer ample opportunities for learning, discussion and debate.

The talk was an introduction to IoT. The discussion addressed all parts of the IoT landscape without going into depth on any particular aspect. The demo at the end gave participants an insight into WiSense and its platform. Key takeaways from this session:

• IoT is fundamentally devices connected to a network and bridging the real world with cyber world.
• Devices or things can sense, compute, interact and take decisions on their own or in groups.
• All the big players are investing or already committed to IoT: Google, Intel, ARM, Cisco, GE, IBM, Bosch, Oracle, etc.
• Interest in IoT peaked in 2014 as shown by Gartner’s Hype Chart.
• Architectural issues, security and interoperability will be key issues to be addressed in the coming years. Real growth with start in 2016 when industry resolves these issues.
• Consumer electronics industry will probably have the first IoT devices, before such devices are deployed in the enterprise. Interesting and useful products are already available.
• There are lots of opportunities for app developers. Platform providers will enable these developers to prototype quickly and reduce time to market.
