“There are technologies to go into space, but there is no technology to go 10 feet below the ground and clean the sewer pipes. This thought made us work towards eliminating manual scavenging of manholes,” says Suraj. “Our idea started with a group of three mechanical engineers who participated in the IIT Bombay competition and won a national level award. Later, we formed an interdisciplinary team of 26 students from various Engineering departments and worked on the real time prototype for about 4 years during our college days. So the students who worked on the prototype started their own startup 4 months back. Our robots should be a necessity to clean pipes everywhere.”
The startup aims to build three products and has developed two prototypes of one of them so far. It was in their second year of Engineering that the team came across a news item about people dying due to manual scavenging of manholes. They set on the path to put an end to this by working night and day on developing the first prototype. After graduation the founders started Drona Automations.
