”Our circular business model allows our customers to get their groceries in reusable containers for a small deposit, instead of single-use plastics and return it after use to eliminate plastic waste,” says Shyam.
Two disparate events influenced the Startup:
1. A few years ago, Shyam went on an expedition to New Zealand along the mountains and seas. He was surprised by the cleanliness, as he did not find a single litter of plastic waste along the way. Ever since, he wondered why it could not be the same in India.
2. A decade ago Shyam’s mom was diagnosed with a terminal illness. “I figured there are more than 10,000 food additives and even seemingly simple foods like milk, bread, oils, butter, biscuits, sauce are loaded with preservatives, sugars and other enhancers – causing health effects like allergies, mood swings, unexpected diseases…” says Shyam. “The good part is my mom cured herself just by eating clean and organic food. The bad part is organic is still for the elite and few.”
This is what led him to set up Cleanlabel with an aim to eradicate all single-use plastics.
