SUMMARY:Angel Investment Insights - Mr. Nagaraja Prakasam\, Angel Investor
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nNagaraja Prakasam is an Angel Investor and member of the Indian Angel Network (IAN) where he founded “IAN impact”\, a sub-group that focuses on ventures that solve problems of people at the bottom of the pyramid. He is also a mentor at N S Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL)\, and an adviser to Native Lead Foundation. He has also served in several corporate roles and holds a BE from Thiagarajar College\, India and an MBA from San Diego/Kennesaw State University\, US. \nBeyond the Friends and Family round\, early-stage Startups seek funding from Angels. Understanding how the Angel “system” ticks is important so that the Startup knows when to approach this group\, what they look for in the Startup at the funding stage\, and the perspective and role of the Angel investor in the management of the Startup business. \n  \n\n“Angel Investment Insights” were one investor’s opinion about one specific network – Indian Angel Network (IAN). Angel funds and the “quality of money” that they bring is an important aspect for a Startup to consider. \nKey takeaways from the presentation \n1) India has a number of rural and social problems – IAN “Impact”\, a sub group of IAN encourages Startups that address these problems \n2) IAN takes up to 30 % equity for its investments starting at 25lakhs ($40000) \n3) IAN takes 5% equity when it only mentors and does not fund a Startup

SUMMARY:Successful Apps - The Hygiene Factors - Sudhir Goel\, Director App Mantras
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSudhir Goel\, is Director of App Mantras Software\, a mobile-focused software company and MD\, Obsidian Software\, a KPO (Knowledge Process Outsourcing) that provides medical coding and billing services to US healthcare providers. Mr. Goel has also worked in senior leadership positions in Global IT companies both in India & USA. He is an Engineer from Delhi College of Engineering and MBA from the Indian Institute of Management\, Bangalore. \nThough Apps have been around for a few years\, the landscape continues to be a challenge for new entrants as well as seasoned players. This session is yet another opportunity for developers or founders to understand the speaker’s perspectives on what is required to build successful Apps. Please also come prepared to share your experiences or your questions. \nHere are the takeaways from our speaker at last Saturday’s meeting on “Successful Apps – The Hygiene Factors” – \n1) An App idea must serve a specific need\, preferably be a “pain killer” rather than a “vitamin” \n2) Aim to generate revenue. If you plan to be a charity\, get out of the Startup business \n3) Seek feedback from people (not family & friends) using a quick and dirty prototype\, and ensure that the App is intuitive to your audience. Test and Test again \n4) Keep budgets low\, evaluate your own strengths and skills\, and combine the needs of your business with the right blend of employment and outsourcing \n5) Fail quickly and cheaply. Have contingencies planned\, pivot or quit if need be\, but quickly \n6) Founders should recognize that just tech does not sell\, marketing and monetizing Apps is a huge challenge

SUMMARY:How To Create Breakthrough Innovation Using Design Thinking - Parameswaran Venkataraman CEO Ideo
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMr. Parameswaran Venkataraman has over the last 17 years\, worn multiple hats – Interaction Designer\, User Researcher\, Design Director\, Innovation Consultant – at IDEO\, GE Healthcare\, and Sapient. \nAs Director at IDEO\, he led strategic innovation engagements across India\, China and Russia. Mr. Venkataraman’s passion lies in finding design-thinking led solutions for emerging markets\, a task that he has executed for a variety of multi-national clients. He serves as Advisory Board member of Saaf India and has been an Executive Council member at “The Centre for Emerging Market Solutions”\, Indian School of Business\, Hyderabad. \nStartups often discount the importance of Design when building products\, while this could be the difference between having good product and great product. \nMr. Venkataraman will be speaking at Lounge47 on the 19th. of July 2014\, 4pm. Please RSVP via email – (lab247 AT Lounge47 DOT in) or at www.meetup.com/lounge47. \nParam focused on the much used term\, Ԅesign ThinkingԠand made it more understandable to the audience. Design thinking as a mindset and methodology for problem solving\, starts with understanding the user first and adopts specific methods and processes that enable practitioners\, to uncover valuable insights that would not have been visible otherwise. Our key takeaways mirror the phases of Design Thinking and its application 1) Develop empathy for the user\, observing and capturing details of their action and emotion 2) Brainstorm and admit a large number of new ideas. Use discipline to build on ideas 3) Re-frame the problem. Oftentimes the problem is not what you originally thought it was. 4. Adopt rapid prototyping and fail if need be\, but fail cheap. \nFor Startups\, a design centric approach is one that Lounge47 recommends to 1) Overcome any disconnects from market needs and 2) Trim technology features that do not directly contribute to market needs.

SUMMARY:Chaipoint.com - The Power of Execution - Tejus Chandra\, CFO Chaipoint
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n\n\n  \n\n\n  \nMr. Tejus Chandra is CFO of Mountain Trail Foods\, parent company of Chai Point\, a Chai (tea)-on-call delivery service Startup launched in 2010. Mr. Chandra has also worked at Ernst & Young and Goldman Sachs and holds a CA and IIM degree. \nChaipoint has grown to 19 outlets in Bangalore and 3 in Delhi. From ensuring that the tea tastes just right\, to maintaining the quality for 60 minutes to ensuring delivery within 30 minutes\, Mr. Chandra has a lot to share from this 4-year execution journey. \n\n\n“Chaipoint.com – The Power of Execution” was a session that dissected the Chaipoint case-study – a retail outlet and delivery chain that sells mainly freshly brewed Chai (tea)\, to the white-collared Indian worker. The Startup launched in 2010 and now serves more than 1m cups of tea and adds 3-4 retail outlets a month. The company took a simple\, well-understood concept of “Chai” and achieved it’s current scale through relentless execution. \nKey takeaways: \n1) An idea without execution only remains an idea; Intellectualize\, but start executing quickly to enable market validation and fine-tuning \n2) Aim for profitability right from the beginning \n 3) How quickly you assimilate your learning into your process is also a reflection of your potential scale \n4) Defining process and detail that can be used to train employees should be a key focus \n5) Appropriate use of Information Technology and adaptation over time should be a hygiene factor \n6) Open communication channels with employees and a flatter organization leads to quicker problem resolution as they arise

SUMMARY:Leveraging Open Source To Build Startups - Srivibhavan Balaram\, Co-founder & CEO CloudByte
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSrivibhavan Balaram\, GM & MD at Vocera Communications India\, has spent over 25 years in the software Industry building servers\, switches and storage systems at HP\, Novell\, Business Objects and AT&T Bell Labs. He was the Founder & CEO of CloudByte\, a storage company with a vision to deliver guaranteed quality of Service in shared (as in cloud) storage. \nOpen Source technology is often leveraged to build the technology backbone faster and cheaper. Since this has an impact on speed-to-market and burn-rate\, these advantages are very important for Startups. However\, understanding the terrain and how to play in it is key. Bring your thoughts and questions to the session so we can better understand how open source can be leveraged to build Startups. \n“Leveraging Open Source To Build Startups” conveyed several important messages to Startups considering Open Source. \n1) Contribute before you consume\, because Open Source is a community-driven model and being part of the family helps you understand its future direction\, a detail which could be important to your Startup \n2) Contributing to the Open Source pool gives companies\, especially Startups\, extra credibility with customers \n3) Using Open Source allows you to narrow down and focus on your key challenges\, the net result being that Startups gain time and a good quality crowd-tested foundation \n 4) When used correctly\, investors would regard Open Source-usage as a means to reduce technology and execution risk \n 5) Startups should also consider employing continuous due diligence to ensure that engineering staff follow the intended fit of Open Source within the business. \n6) Since it has strong licensing clauses\, founders should use Open Source with care – and see if it matches their vision of building the company.

SUMMARY:'Apps ֠- What Not To Do' - Bala Sundara Raman\, Co-founder IdeoPhone.
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMr. Bala Sundara Raman\, Co-founder\, Ideophone\, has over 10 years of experience in information extraction and retrieval\, for web & mobile. He has built key products at Yahoo!\, Ziva\, and InMobi before co-founding Ideophone\, a Startup which built mobile apps for commuters. He currently works at Zettata\, a Bangalore /California based next generation e-commerce search Startup. \nToday’s App economy provides a wonderful spring-board for programmers to build companies turning ideas into Apps\, but a vast majority of these Apps fail to get traction. This session is positioned to help sort and discuss the factors that have resulted in failed Apps. \n“Apps – What Not To Do?” described the journey of Ideophone – the Startup with a large vision\, several Apps and a platform that targeted commuters\, gained 120\,000 users\, tackled world markets\, got a lot of press\, but eventually failed. \nSeveral key takeaways\, questions and tips that are especially relevant to App-based Startups. \n1) Developing the App is the easy part\, but is your Startup sufficiently prepared for what comes after? \n2) Is your vision bigger than the capabilities of the team? Bite only as much as you can chew. \n 3) Do you have a business plan? It is important to go through this exercise upfront and push yourself to address critical aspects that impact your business \n4) If there is insufficient traction\, pivot and pivot early. \nThe last slide read “Make mistakes\, but not ours. All the best!”. Well Said!.

DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nTapan Kumar Das\, CEO of iTiffin.in\, and Director & Co-Cofounder of Qua Nutrition. He is a seasoned professional with 15 years experience in the Retail\, E-commerce and Wellness domains\, both in larger companies as well as Startups. Mr. Das was previously CFO of Flipkart \, CFO of Indian Terrain and Founding member of YLG salon & spa. He holds a Chartered Accountant and General Management degree from IIMA. \nSurviving the first year of any Startup is in itself a daunting task; surviving the first three years is even more important as many a reward shows up in this time-frame – join us as Mr. Das shares his experiences and insights. \n\n\n“Startups – How To Survive The First Three Years” was an exceptional talk in its integrity\, honesty and interactivity. The first three years in a Startup’s life presents many challenges and the most powerful weapon an entrepreneur has is – him/her-self. \nKey takeaways: \n1) Challenges come in many different forms – convincing family\, managing finances on a shoe-string budget\, dealing with negativity (sometimes from close friends)\, and choosing investors that match/understand the Startup’s vision. \n2) Developing a balanced\, street-smart\, sixth-sense driven (instinctive decision-making) personality that can anticipate scenarios and dealing with them with timely action is key to survival. \n3) Having minimal finances coupled with a positive attitude forces creativity and intellectualization\, and also uncovers new business\nopportunities that are important for survival.

SUMMARY:Preparing To Be An Entrepreneur While You Study - Prof. B. S. Satyanarayana\, Principal\, R.V. College of Engg\, Bangalore.
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nProf. B.S.Satyanarayana\, is Principal of R.V. College of Engineering (RVCE)\, Bangalore\, and Professor of Electronics and Communication Engineering. Through his career spanning 29 years\, he has been involved in transforming organizations and managing change. He has worked both in India and abroad (UK & Japan) – with industry\, R& D labs\, Universities & Government agencies. Teaching and guiding students\, research and launching new ventures are some of his many activities. He has initiated Rs. 250cr ($50M) worth of R & D projects\, holds two patents\, has presented at over 200 conferences and published 120 papers. He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Cambridge University\, UK. \nIndia is seeing a surge towards Entrepreneurship\, many of these wannabe entrepreneurs being students. Juggling the pressures of academic life and the desire to start a company is challenging\, and we hope that our speaker will give our audience some tips on how to manage both. \n“Preparing to be an Entrepreneur While You Study” showed that there are a number of opportunities that can be put in place to encourage entrepreneurship within educational institutes in India. It also delved into the cultural and economic barriers in the system\, the limited interest of companies to encourage entrepreneurs\, and the short-term mindsets of both faculty and students; some key reasons that stifle the mood to take on entrepreneurship. Nevertheless\, there is a growing set of entrepreneurs that defy these odds and go on to build companies. As always\, it is passion that fuels such Startups.

SUMMARY:Apollo Hospitals - The Entrepreneurial Journey - Dr. Umapathy Panyala\, CEO Apollo Hospitals Group
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDr. Umapathy Panyala\, CEO\, Apollo Hospitals Group\, Karnataka is our next speaker\, and he plans to run us through the entrepreneurial journey of Apollo Hospitals. His current role entails strategy & execution of the hospital network in Karnataka and developing the US\, Europe and Asia Pacific markets. Dr. Panyala transitioned into management after 10 years of medical practice. He has spent 17 years at Apollo and seen it grow from a modest beginning in 1983\, 150-beds to 8500-beds across 50 hospitals in India and overseas. He has also worked as CEO of Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital\, a JV between the Karnataka Government and Apollo Hospitals. He is from the Hyderabad Public School\, has an MBA from Symbiosis University\, Pune and a Masters in Hospital Administration from the National University of Singapore. \nUnderstanding how Apollo Hospitals became a National and International brand in Healthcare is not just interesting to all entrepreneurs\, but we hope it will also provide specific pointers to entrepreneurs who are looking to launch projects in the Healthcare space. \n“Apollo Hospitals – The Entrepreneurial Journey”\, told the story of how this once-upon-a-time Startup launched with a simple goal in mind – to provide quality care in India (a factor assumed to be a hygiene factor out in the west) and built massive hospital infrastructure and reach over 30 years. This Startup leveraged technology\, local infrastructure and other factors to deliver same-quality care at a fraction of what it would cost in most western countries. One amazing fact from the presentation was that Dr. Reddy (founder of Apollo Hospitals) was 52 when he launched his company\, underlining once again that age cannot and should not dissuade the persuit of entrepreneurship. Other key takeaways: 1. “StarTrek” -like medical devices are not science fiction\, they are already here\, and they should be leveraged. 2. “Mindset” of older doctors and patients is the number one challenge for technology adoption. 3. Regulation will always be outdated\, and many minefields cannot be discovered without launching and pushing the envelope.

SUMMARY:Demystifying Funding for Startups. - Abishek Surendran\, AVP Investments\, Reservoir Capital
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMr. Abishek Surendran\, AVP Investments\, Reservoir capital – Exfinity fund. Mr. Surendran has 9 years of experience in Private Equity\, Investment Banking\, Corporate strategy and Software development. He currently leads investments at Reservoir\, a 125 Cr [USD 20 M] VC fund. He holds an MBA from IIM Bangalore and a B.E. from Mumbai University. \nUnderstanding funding is critical for entrepreneurs. How do I fund my startup – friends & family\, seed\, angel or VC funds? What are the implications of choosing one over the other? A startup is confronted by many such small and big decisions and taking informed decisions avoids having to deal with pitfalls later. Also\, understanding the psyche of the investment community is important and this is a great opportunity to get your nagging questions answered. \n“Demystifying Funding for Startups” was an excellent session that sketched the basics of early stage funding. Picking the right “color of money” is important – an investor’s attitude\, risk appetite\, knowledge\, and networks\, amongst others\, add value to the Startup. Likewise\, picking the “wrong” investor could deplete valuable focus\, time\, energy and resources – a misstep Startups should avoid. To keep this session aimed towards early-stage Startups\, the focus rested on FFF (Friends\, Family & Fools)\, Angel and VC fund classes\, and how they differ in terms of goals\, demands and time-frames.

SUMMARY:Safety & Security Risks in a Hyper-connected (IoT) World. - Tamaghna Basu\, Senior Security Specialist\, EBay
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMr. Tamaghna Basu\, Senior Security Specialist at eBay\, who is a hacker and researcher at heart. His areas of interest span App security to Cyber Forensics. Being an active presenter on the security conference circuit he is well positioned to tell us about the world of Internet security and its impact on our future lives. The potent new entrant – in the form of IoT and the security issues it poses in our lives need to be better understood. Mr. Basu plans to help with just that.\nWhile IoT is a hot topic because of the cool products and new functions that promise to automate many aspects of our lives\, an often-overlooked aspect of this paradigm is the security challenge that it brings. This presentation and discussion will center on the latest trends and thoughts related to Cyber security in the IoT world\, and should better position entrepreneurs to address what is considered the bare essentials. Mr. Basu will present his views and take your questions at Lounge47 on Saturday\, the 19th. of April\, 2014 at 4pm. Please RSVP. \n“Safety & Security Risks in a Hyper-connected World” exposed vulnerabilities to our privacy\, the methods used to counter Cyber threats and the chilling fact that ignorance and simple lapses could create unwanted or dangerous exposure\, many times without our knowledge. The entry of smart devices (Internet of Things (IoT)) obviously takes this fragility to yet another level as these “things” could generate private data that\ncould be exposed and potentially bring along more serious threats than just privacy issues.

SUMMARY:De-risking a New Venture & Building a Better ISP - Luke Langford\, COO Vivint Wireless
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nLuke Langford\, COO\, Vivint Wireless & Director of Strategy\, Vivint. Luke’s mandate was to put an innovation process in place and identify new billion dollar business opportunities\, a role he took on just after the Blackstone acquisition of Vivint closed\, at the end of 2012. In 2013 he piloted Vivint’s entry into the ISP business and has been leading Vivint Wireless since. Luke has also worked at Zynga in a product management role and at Innosight – Professor Clayton Christensen’s consulting firm. He has a BA in Chemistry and an MBA\, both from Harvard. \nThis talk should inform us about how to think about the risk of a new venture\, how to categorize and prioritize and how to track and test risks. Application of these principles at Vivint Wireless along with simple tools and practices would offer entrepreneurs real and practical examples to learn from. \nThe talk centered around differences between risk-taking and risk-mitigation – why and how most entrepreneurs don’t pay enough attention to the differences between these two paradigms\, and how risk-mitigation is key to managing Startup variables. Case studies of an online education Startup that failed and simple risk management tools used to de-risk operations at Vivint Wireless helped cement the concepts in our minds and better relate to the realities. \nPresentation link: http://www.slideshare.net/Lounge47/vivint-wireless-how-to-derisk-a-new-venture-build-a-better-isp-luke-langford

Key takeaways from this session: \n• IoT is fundamentally devices connected to a network and bridging the real world with cyber world.\n• Devices or things can sense\, compute\, interact and take decisions on their own or in groups.\n• All the big players are investing or already committed to IoT: Google\, Intel\, ARM\, Cisco\, GE\, IBM\, Bosch\, Oracle\, etc.\n• Interest in IoT peaked in 2014 as shown by Gartner’s Hype Chart.\n• Architectural issues\, security and interoperability will be key issues to be addressed in the coming years. Real growth with start in 2016 when industry resolves these issues.\n• Consumer electronics industry will probably have the first IoT devices\, before such devices are deployed in the enterprise. Interesting and useful products are already available.\n• There are lots of opportunities for app developers. Platform providers will enable these developers to prototype quickly and reduce time to market.

SUMMARY:Building Creative Communities - Daniel Oxenhandler\, Creative Coordinator Construkt Festival
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nDaniel Oxenhandler who organizes the 5000-strong Construkt Festival– a multi-day event focused on connecting creative communities with the aim of pushing disruptive innovation within societies. Daniel has gathered experience in different parts of the world and will be sharing his learnings. \nIf you look carefully\, the challenge of planning a Construkt Festival in a new city is very similar to launching your startup. You start with an audience of practically 0. \nWe hope this talk will give the audience insights into these fundamental challenges that all Startups face – building an audience\, motivating them and keeping their attention on your product and brand. \nDaniel Oxenhandler the speaker at “Building Creative Communities” taught the science of {Connecting\n+ Learning + Sharing + Creating}; the power of explaining the “why” first to people rather than the “how” or “what” when building communities around your idea\, product or vision. The interactive part of the session had participants\n“colliding” with each other\, a new experimental technique – getting to know people in the room at a deeper level by understanding their skills and knowledge and finding out how they could support each other attain their aspirations. An interesting and enjoyable session!

SUMMARY:Understanding Bitcoin - Benson Samuel\, ‎CTO & Founder Coinsecure.in
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMr. Benson Samuel. He has been involved in setting up Bitcoin businesses\, writes a blog\, advises startups and is currently setting up his own Bitcoin venture – Crypto Labs. \nBitcoin\, launched in 2009\, has been described as a digital currency\, a protocol and an open-source software stream that allows peer-to-peer transactions with no central authority and little or no processing fees. The network manages transactions and issuance of Bitcoins. Its origin\, varied levels of acceptance by government regulators\, slow adoption by business\, popularity with developers\, interest by leading venture capital firms\, amongst several other twists and turns\, is mysterious and enigmatic to some and perhaps an early adoption platform for others. \nThese were early days and the group was seeking to explore beyond the enigma\, We had an engaged audience asking questions to get to the heart of the technology\, the cuurency\, its future and its uses. It helped to have several members of the Bitcoin community in the audience. There was much discussion.
